Canada Beef
Facts about beef in Canada
- An average Canadian consumes around 99 kilograms of meat per year- making it one of the most meat-loving countries in the world. Beef and poultry are the most consumed products here- with the latter being produced in plenty.
- Canada’s 2010 consumption was recorded at 20.2 per capita and decreased to 18.2 after 2 years.
- Canadians’ red meat consumption is within Food Guide recommendations. Total average red meat consumption is equivalent to one Food Guide Serving
- The decline in the number of slaughtered cattle is also linked to the decline of beef consumption in Canada- where the per capita consumption rate has decreased from 38.8 kg in 2008 to 20.2 kg in 2010
- The per capita consumption decrease is explained- in part- by an increasingly sophisticated consumer in a more competitive and diverse marketplace- an aging consumer population making non-red meat choices with their diets- and an inadequate coordination of the beef supply to meet consumers’ tastes and preferences.
