Facts about beef in Jordan
- Jordan has 29.8 kg/person/year of meat consumption in 2002.
- Raising livestock for both meat and dairy products continues to be an important aspect of Jordanian rural life. Production in livestock contributes around 55% of agricultural sector’s contribution to GDP in 2008
- Livestock production consists primarily of red meat- poultry meat- milk and eggs. In contrast to plant production which has decreased by 24% between 2007 and 2008- livestock production has increased considerably in recent years with red meat production increasing by 58% in 2008
- Despite a strong domestic focus- Jordan continues to import a significant number of sheep- slaughtered chilled mutton and other red meats. In fact- red meats represent 31% of the country’s meat consumption.
- imports of beef which were subject to conditions placed by the Ministry of Agriculture and excluded hormone-treated beef has also been lifted. The ban- however- did not apply to dairy products- semen or beef gelatin used for industrial purposes.
