Facts about beef in Chad

  • According to FAO’s 2009 report Chad was ranked 144th among 171 countries with 27.8 lbs/person/year
  • Due to meat cost- meat and fish are often dried; they’re preserved for later use- especially in the south.
  • The Arabs of northern Chad–who are nomadic or live in the capital of N’Djamena– mostly eat more staples of dairy and meat than those group form the south
  • Goats are the most commonly raised animals in Chad; their meat is frequently eaten and incorporated into meals. When beef is used- it is chopped and made into a tomato-sauce dish called nashif.
  • Jarret de boeuf is a traditional Chadian beef stew- commonly prepared during occasions by boiling beef in water with salt- pepper- garlic- onions- chili powder and whole cloves.
